War-Torn Girlhood, Newborn Dreams

The Syrian crisis has left hundreds of thousands of adolescent girls vulnerable to child marriage and in need of adequate gender-based violence, sexual education and reproductive health services. UNFPA is helping to fill this void in Jordan, where 42,000 Syrian refugees are girls between the ages of 12 and 17. This is Asma's story.

Architect, Not Child Bride

Over 1,800 youth in Jordan’s Zaatari refugee camp have benefitted from trainings on reproductive health and gender-based violence at the Questscope-UNFPA Youth Centre. This is the story of 16-year-old Yanal, who became an advocate against child marriage after learning about its harms at the centre.

Divorced at 17

Lamis thought getting married would be her only hope for a better future after fleeing to Jordan as a refugee from Syria. But, soon after exchanging vows, her husband became abusive and she promptly filed for divorce. Though it wasn't easy, Lamis fought through the stigma of being a teen divorcee. She re-enrolled in high school and plans to go to college next. Her ultimate dream, she says, is to become a psychiatrist so she can help others.
